With all the chefs and waiters in the restaurant hailing from Mexico, authenticity was an essential aspect of the project. To reflect this in the art, we took inspiration from Mexico’s vibrant street art and famous artists. Aside from commissioning art for the restaurant, the team was also involved in developing a series of architectural panels that add to the interior design.
Upon entering La Tablita, patrons are welcomed into a design story that runs throughout the venue. Working with design collective, Caravan, we created a unique cut-metal design inspired by iconic Mexican paper picado. Taking the form of a series of patterned panels, this design begins at the entrance doorway and continues through to the bar and the main restaurant, creating an immersive experience for guests.
Throughout the main restaurant and bar, artist Lama Khatib Daniel created a number of original artworks drawing on Mexican culture. These include lively hand-drawn chalk illustrations; playful, street art-inspired paintings; and an original mixed-media painting as an ode to famed Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.
Capsule Arts also worked with Spanish artist Ruben Sanchez for an original painting on reclaimed wood at the restaurant entrance.
