World Art Day

World Art Day celebrates diversity and culture through art, and so we asked our team to share their favorite artists from their countries and cultures.

Take a journey through the world as you explore artists from our diverse team members below.

CA Team Member: Elyse Kassis, Design Assistant
Artist: Lamia Joreige
Artwork Title: The River
Artist Origin:
Lebanon
Why Elyse chose the artwork:
”This set of drawings are based on Beirut’s maps. They are drawn in a way that highlight the topography of the river then naturally transform into abstract forms, representing the delicacy of flowers and human cells. I like this set as it celebrates the complexity of the city’s qualities and identity, despite the hardships it has and is facing.”

CA Team Member: Lourdy Ghorayeb, Art Consultant
Artist: Jad Khoury (Potato Nose)
Artwork Title: War Peace Project
Artist Origin:
Lebanon
Why Lourdy chose the artwork:
”Through the medium of paper and ink, and a desire for lines and colours, Jad gave birth to the Potato Nose. I love how Jad implements his art mainly on scarred buildings in Beirut and highlights on the iconic monuments that are still standing since the end of the civil war. He is known for adorning Beirut’s war scars with his colourful street art. His work passionately calls for better universal human connection.”

CA Team Member: Marphy Ginlo, Estimator
Artist: Juan Luna
Artwork Title: Spoliarium
Artist Origin:
Philippines
Why Marphy chose the artwork:
”The Spoliarium is important to Filipino people as it contributed to the start of the Filipino revolution during Spanish colonialism. The painting was submitted by Luna to the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1884 in Madrid, where it won the first gold medal. The picture recreates a despoiling scene in a Roman circus where dead gladiators are stripped of weapons and garments. When both Filipino, Luna and Hidalgo, won the top awards in the Madrid Exposition of 1884, they proved to the world that indios could, despite their supposed barbarian race, paint better than the Spaniards who colonized them.”

CA Team Member: Nadine Khoury, Art Curator
Artist: Mona Hatoum
Artwork Title: Twelve Windows
Artist Origin:
Palestinian
Why Nadine chose the artwork:
”The minimal yet powerful installation reflects embroidery as an act of resistance against the discontinuities of exile. Each ‘window’ represents, through its motifs, stitches, colors and patterns, a key region of Palestine.”

CA Team Member: Natalie Goodall, Project Coordinator
Artist: Christina Hesford
Artist Origin:
UK
Why Natalie chose the artwork:
”Christina taught and studied at Manchester School of Art during my second year of studying Textiles in Practice. Christina is an artist maker. She uses textile processes such as weaving and knotting to make art objects and wall-based artworks. Weaving is an inherently time-intensive skill and Christina’s work challenges the trend towards an ever-quicker pace of life. The delicacy and fragility of her chosen materials really inspires me as her work allows the viewer to appreciate the numbers, counting, repetition and rhythms prevalent in weaving and knotting.”

CA Team Member: Sabrina Uzcategui, Senior Art Consultant
Artist: Jesus Rafael Soto
Artwork Title: Penetrables
Artist Origin:
Venezuela
Why Sabrina chose the artwork:
”I love his “Penetrables” sculptural series because they are monumental pieces that from afar, give the illusion of a dense mass; but when the viewer comes into contact, they have a very different aesthetic that changes as they transit through the piece. The Artists’ core idea for these pieces was “A universe filled with Relationships”. The notion that people are essential in any artwork made his work a success.”

CA Team Member: Sandra Fadayel, Art Director
Artist: Naqsh Collective
Artwork Title: WihdehWaShatat (Unit and Diaspora)
Artist Origin:
Jordan
Why Sandra chose the artwork:
”What I love most about Naqsh Collective is how they continually evolve their body of work in a way that remains true to their values, story and aesthetic - yet each piece or series is innovative and carries a fresh perspective from the last. The stories behind each finished artwork are expressed all the way to the details, techniques, and materials used to craft the pieces.”

CA Team Member: Sylvia Sedrak, Art Consultant
Artist: Adam Henein
Artist Origin:
Egypt
Why Sylvia chose the artwork:
”The late prominent Egyptian artist Adam Henein, truly explores the essence of form through his paintings and sculptures, drawing inspiration from the rich ancient Egyptian heritage. Henein revived old techniques such as painting on papyrus with natural dyes, to create his abstract contemporary visions.”
