CA Artists Featured in the UAE Pavilion, 56th Venice Biennale

The Venice Biennale, the world's most prestigious - not to mention largest - art exhibition is in full swing and we're thrilled that two of the artists we work with for our limited edition print collection are featured in this year's National Pavilion UAE!

Dr. Najat MekyandMohammad Al Qassabare both included alongside 13 other artists in this year's presentation '1980 - Today: Exhibitions in the UAE', as two pioneering Emirati artists who have helped to shape the country's art landscape. Curated by Sheikha Hoor Bint Sultan Al Qasimi (President and Director of the Sharjah Art Foundation), the exhibition presents a selection of works from different decades highlighting the emergence of art practices in the UAE. The Emirates Fine Arts Society, a non-profit association that was formed in 1980 in Sharjah, has served as a main point of focus and inspiration for research.

Introducing...Dr Najat Meky

Acclaimed Emirati artist Dr Najat Meky is one of the UAE’s pioneering contemporary artists. Her works reflect on the value of society, culture and tradition, and the female figure is prominent throughout her paintings. She uses women in her art, “because I want to show the ambition and hope Arab women have, and also to prove they have an important role to play in society”

Dr Meky plays with colours, subjects, shapes, lines and symbolism to express and trigger emotions. She considers all her work to be connected to environment and paints nature in vibrant colours to create visual rhythms.

Emirati artist Dr Najat Meky lives and works in Dubai. Born in the UAE in 1956, Meky was the first Emirati woman to be granted government scholarship to study art abroad. She has exhibited extensively in the region, including at Sharjah Art Museum in 2011, which also produced a comprehensive publication on her work. On an international level, Dr Meky has participated in numerous prestigious art events around the world such as the fourth International Beijing Biennial (2010); the China International Sculpture Symposium (2008); the International Art Festival in Korea and the Middle East (2010); and the Teheran International Biennial.
