Kathryn Ryan | A Quiet Place : Paintings & Drawings 1995 - 2015

Capsule Arts artist Kathryn Ryan is the subject of a new survey exhibition opening on 18 July, 6pm, at the Warrnambool Art Gallery in her native Australia.

Kathryn was based in the UAEfrom 2008 - 2014 and is now currently dividing her time between Dubai and Australia. The upcoming exhibition brings together works from her time living in the UAE alongside her landscape paintings of the vast Australian landscape, and spans her artistic practice from 1995 - 2015.

Bluestone Magazine recently published an article on Kathryn's studio practice and upcoming survey exhibition, A Quiet Place, which you can read now here.

Kathryn is inspired by the quality of light, mood and atmosphere found in her surroundings. While in Australia, she has spent many years painting the South Victorian landscapes, with the gnarled and wintry trees serving as a source of inspiration

In Dubai the focus of her practice changed from expansive landscape views to the intimate details of nature, light and shadow found in her local environment, from the plant life to the intricately patterned shadows cast by ornate Arabic lanterns.  She explains: "I was searching for the beauty in nature in urban Dubai".

Capsule Arts offers a range of limited edition art prints of Kathryn's works made in the UAE, all available to buy online HERE.

Introducing...Kathryn Ryan

Introducing Dubai-based artist Kathryn Ryan, who also featured in our 2013 launch collection. Kathryn is inspired by the quality of light, mood and atmosphere found in her surroundings, an interest which is reflected in her striking series of prints in our first collection, which you can view and purchase here. Now she is adding to this selection with two new flower studies.

Originally from Australia, Kathryn has spent many years painting the South Victorian landscapes of Australia. After moving to Dubai several years ago, the focus of her practice changed from vast views of the Australian landscape to the intimate details of nature, light and shadow found in her local environment, from the plant life to the intricately patterned shadows cast by ornate Arabic lanterns.

Ryan uses meticulous layers of paint and glazes applied over many months to achieve remarkable depth, luminosity, harmony and balance in her oil paintings. Her charcoal drawings have a similarly rich quality of depth, which Ryan acheives through buillding up and rubbing away layers of charcoal.

Check out this in progress video capturing the process behind her charcoal drawing, Dried Rose & Shadow #2, which features as a print in our new collection:

If you're over in Australia, Kathryn's work can currently be seen as part of the Tattersalls Invitation Landscape Prize in Brisbane (1-19 September 2014), followed by the upcoming 25th Anniversary Exhibition, Flinders Lane Gallery, Melbourne (16 September - 4 October). For those of us here in the UAE, after the Capsule Arts launch exhibition on 11 September, 7-10pm, Kathryn's work will be on show as part of the No White Walls : 2nd Annual Exhibition at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr in Abu Dhabi, opening 25 September.

Kathryn Ryan holds an Honours Degree of Fine Art from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Fine Art, Painting, from Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education. Her works have been exhibited extensively in major commercial galleries both in the UAE and internationally and she has been a finalist in numerous prestigious National Art Prizes. Her works are held in several major Australian collections including Parliament House Canberra, Macquarie Group Collection, RACV collection, Artbank & BP Australia. She is represented by Olsen Irwin Gallery in Sydney and Flinders Lane Gallery in Melbourne, where she has regular solo exhibitions.
