Kathryn Wilson is a Dubai based painter and photographer whose work has been strongly influenced by what she sees in her local environment. Her abstract style contemplates the flow of contemporary and traditional life in the Emirates and the interaction of people, shapes, and patterns. Warm colors weave into cool and rhythmic patterns lure the viewer into an alternate world, one where everything is in balance.
Wilson has been a resident of Dubai for over 19 years. Her paintings are creative journeys where she responds to medium instinctively and automatically. There is a tribal energy within each work where tone layers upon itself, while the coffee medium dries smooth like varnish. For Wilson, by adding a title in Arabic with English translation, she believes that she can prompt the viewer to decipher clues about her work. The compositions contain a fundamental yet strangely familiar knowledge that urge the viewer to contemplate the forces at work.
She frequently explores the city around her with a camera and photographs things that she finds inspiring. Her fascination for people and traditional life, in the more remote areas of the UAE and it’s neighboring country Oman, have been hugely influential to her work.
Kathryn Wilson has recently exhibited at the Abu Dhabi Art Hub in a show called “Colours of Unity”. She has also been part of the “Emirates Photographers Forum Launch Exhibition” at the Dusit Thani hotel in Dubai and “Project Mega” in Dubai Mall and Fn Designs in Alserkal Avenue.
She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Oxford University in 2004 and she has recently been appointed the Director of Art at Brighton College Abu Dhabi.
