James Matthews creates art inspired by sound and music. His interest in the synchronicity and relationship of everyday sounds has led to art that has layers upon layers of shapes, forms and patterns. His abstract work is a quilt of patterns, textures and whirlwinds of shapes.
Matthews’ work is created using a range of printmaking techniques such as woodcuts, monoprinting, pochoir, collage and embossing with a variety of media. He is following a tradition of artists who use sound to inspire their work. Everyday sounds i.e. trains, people, café’s, street sounds etc., are the stimuli. The relationship between sound & painting and painting & music inspires him to create prints that correspond to aural stimuli, aspects of memory and derive from his immediate environment and space.
Since coming to the UAE James has lived in Dubai, Al Ain and Abu Dhabi. He has completed series of commissions both public and private including large scale murals and artworks. He has won prizes and accolades for his work including the Prize of Commendation at the Millfield Summer Show, and Student of the Year Award for the final year of his Fine Art Bachelor Degree course.
Matthews received his Master of Fine Art at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Humberside where he specialised in Printmaking.
He has exhibited frequently, most notably at The Dean Clough Galleries; The Hatton Gallery, England, the World Trade Centre, Dubai and Qibab Art Gallery, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
