First up in our weekly artist features is Abu Dhabi based artist Andrew Field, who ventures out onto the islands of Abu Dhabi to paint out in the open air, taking his inspiration direct from his experiences.
Andrew Field's distressed mark making by rapid brush strokes, rubbing, scratching and pouring contrasts heavily with finer areas of delicate details. In his studio we can see his extensive range of mediums like oil, watercolour and mixed media that provide him the ability to replicate how nature, in his own way, is a mixed palette of textures and rhythms. Found bits of paper that have been washed ashore are incorporated into his work and at all times Field watches for shifts and changes in the landscape in order to translate them unto his canvas. He also documents his surroundings through field notes, which can often be found in his work where he has noted the date, sounds, smells and people.
Inspiration for his work comes from Abstract Expressionists like Jackson Pollack, William DeKooning, Mark Rothko, and Modern British artists like Peter Lanyon and Patrick Heron. One of Britain’s greatest landscapers, Joseph Mallord William Turner RA, has arguably had the largest influence on Field when using watercolor and complex compositions based on elements found within the landscapes. Yet it was his childhood memories of fishing and playing in his grandmother’s backyard, coupled with his interest in physical geography and the changing nature of landscapes that sparked his love for landscape painting.
Andrew Field studied Fine Art and Geography at Lancaster University where he received a first class honours degree. He was awarded a scholarship in recognition of his achievement and contribution to the Art Faculty. He has had solo exhibitions in Lancaster University, Café Céramique in Abu Dhabi, Millennium Hotel in Abu Dhabi and Al Fahim Mercedes Benz Headquarters in Abu Dhabi. He’s furthermore had multiple group exhibitions all over the UAE including The Club in Abu Dhabi, Monde Art Gallery in Mall of Emirates, Dubai, and New Directions at the Fairmont Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Andrew continues to exhibit his work in the UK at The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and regularly participates in prestigious art competitions including The Threadneedle Prize and The Royal West of England Autumn Exhibition.
