Matthew Ryder is a British artist and illustrator living and working in the UAE. He takes inspiration from everyday life, people, and the worlds of politics and celebrity, putting his own unique twist on these subjects. His caricatures include well known celebrity figures such as Mark Wahlberg, Florence and the Machine, President Barack Obama and Steve Jobs among others.
Ryder's love of animals means that they are also a frequent subject of his paintings These animals are often used as a form of playful social critique, as in his recent series of witty observations of expat life in the UAE using an assortment of characters, from hyenas to elephants. For the new collection, Matt is adding to his existing selection with two prints from this series.
"For this small series of paintings I wanted to reflect not just my own time living in the region but for all expats who have experienced life in the Emirates. It's a semi satirical way of looking at our every day experiences, from the sublime to the really quite ridiculous. By using animals to represent us it gives the option to step back from the scene and look in as a casual observer". Matthew Ryder
