Home of Sindbad the Sailor
Mercure Sohar welcomes travelers to the ancient capital of Sohar, which is nestled between the Al Hajjar mountains and the Sea of Oman. Capsule Arts was brought on board to develop a number of large-scale art wallpapers for the public areas which tell a story to guests.
With the artwork created for Mercure Sohar, the aim was to reflect on the culture and history of the city of Sohar, which is widely claimed to be the birthplace of the legendary Sindbad the Sailor.
Capsule Arts worked closely with interior designers, MMAC Associates, to commission a bespoke illustration for the public areas, which tells the classic Arabic tale of the seven voyages of Sindbad.
The story unfolds through a series of monochrome drawings by artist Lama Khatib Daniel, which combine passages of text from the story with striking imagery illustrating Sindbad’s fantastical adventures, from his encounters with gigantic birds through to his lavish visits with kings the world over.
These drawings can be seen by guests as printed wall coverings throughout the hotel’s lobby and all day dining areas.
Capsule Arts worked with Dubai-based artist Lama Khatib Daniel, whose loose and fluid drawing style, and gift for storytelling, was perfectly suited for the design brief.
