BAY LA SUN HOTEL:
Showcasing Saudi artists
Bay La Sun Hotel & Marina is King Abdullah Economic City’s flagship hotel, located in the Bay La Sun district. The deluxe hotel is nestled along a series of waterways, natural lagoons and mangroves, with stunning views over the Red Sea.
As a five-star property and the first hotel to open in the new development, King Abdullah Economic City, it was key for the artworks to make a big impact and enhance the luxurious interior design.
It was also essential for the art to reflect and support the Saudi art scene, with a strong representation of Saudi artists in the hotel.
Capsule Arts supplied a large number of original artworks to the project. The hotel lobby was a key area and here we commissioned four monumental paintings by leading Saudi artists Abdullah Hammas and Zaman Jassim. This is complemented by a sprawling three-dimensional installation of gold and white glazed ceramic tiles by British design studio, Giles Miller Studio.
Saudi art was further represented in the hotel by an abstract piece by Lulwah Al Homoud, a pioneer of contemporary art in the Kingdom; and a pair of vivid paintings by Fatimah Al Nemer.
An extensive number of artists were commissioned for the project, including Saudi artists Zaman Jassim, Abdullah Hammas, Lulwah Al Homoud and Fatimah Al Nemer. Turkish artists also featured prominently, with original pieces by Dubai-based artist and designer Bersun Erturk, Mithat Sen and Seçil Erel on display. Finally, we collaborated with Giles Miller Studio for the ambitious lobby installation; we also worked with the studio in 2014 on a major installation for the Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates.
