AL RAWI BOOKSHOP AND CAFÉ:
More than a bookstore
Sharjah has a rich literary heritage, with the well-respected Sharjah International Book Fair running since 1982. Interior designers, ROAR, paid homage to this in their design of Al Rawi Bookshop and Café, a multi-functional space that is much more than a simple bookstore.
ROAR were tasked with creating a contemporary and uplifting space that serves as a hub for Sharjah’s literary community. The designers took inspiration from the meaning of Al Rawi in Arabic, which translates as ‘the one who tells stories’, creating a design narrative which draws upon the different ways that people can interact with books. Capsule Arts was appointed by ROAR as a production partner, and our team helped to realise a number of the interior designers’ custom sculpture concepts.
Capsule Arts handled the fabrication of two bespoke installations designed by ROAR, using our expertise in art production to ensure high quality finishes and smooth project management. Our team worked with local manufacturers to produce a dramatic hanging mobile sculpture which was inspired by books and words in both Arabic and English. We also brought to life ROAR’s whimsical concept of a series of metal book sculptures suspended from the ceiling, which create the appearance of a cloud of books flying over customers’ heads.
